Open Brand Identity Competition

Location:
Budapest

Designer:
Bálint Lach

Year:
2021

The brand identity proposal created for the Budapest History Museum and its member institutions (Aquincum Museum, Kiscelli Museum, Castle Museum, Budapest Gallery) centers on historical continuity and professional diversity. The cornerstone of the concept is the metaphor of classical architectural orders: the unified umbrella organization is represented by the column as a symbol, while the unique character of each member institution is displayed through different column capitals (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, etc.).

During the design process, a key priority was recognizability and continuity; therefore, the color palette of the logos aligns with the institutions' previous, established identities, avoiding a drastic or alienating transition. As part of the competition entry, in addition to the logo family, the complete basic corporate identity was developed: designs for business cards, letterheads, envelopes, as well as email headers and presentation templates for digital platforms. Although the competition concluded without a winner, the concept highlighted how a diverse system of cultural institutions can be brought to a common visual denominator through a modern interpretation of classical architectural traditions.
